Tile flooring

When a homeowner calls about tile flooring, it is usually because an old floor is cracked, stained, or just no longer fits the room. They might be remodeling a kitchen, updating a bathroom, or finishing a basement. The job starts with a conversation about the space, the tile they have in mind, and what the floor will need to handle. Our crew then schedules a visit to measure and inspect the subfloor before any tile is ordered.

We begin by checking the subfloor for flatness and structural integrity. If it dips or moves, we address that first with self-leveling compound or by reinforcing the joists. Next, we install a cement backer board or an uncoupling membrane, depending on the substrate and tile type. We lay out the tile to minimize cuts, then set each piece in thinset mortar, using spacers for consistent grout lines. After the thinset cures, we grout, seal, and clean the surface.

What makes one tile job different from another is the tile itself, the size of the area, and the layout. Large-format tiles require a flatter subfloor than small mosaics. Natural stone like marble is softer and needs more care during cutting and sealing. The number of corners, doorways, and cabinets affects how many cuts are needed, which adds time. Access to the room and the condition of the existing floor also influence how long the prep takes.

On the day of the job, we protect adjacent floors and walls with paper and tape. We bring all our own tools, including wet saws, trowels, and spacers. We work steadily, but we do not rush the curing times between steps. When we finish, we remove debris and sweep the area. Before we arrive, you should clear the room of furniture and valuables. After we leave, you should keep foot traffic off the floor for the time we recommend, usually at least 24 hours.

Grout lines are not just for looks, they allow the tile to expand and contract with temperature changes. We use a grout float to press the grout fully into the joints, then wipe off excess with a damp sponge. Sealing the grout after it cures protects it from moisture and staining. For showers and wet areas, we also apply a waterproof membrane beneath the tile to keep water from reaching the subfloor.

The condition of the subfloor is the single biggest factor in how long a tile job lasts. We check for deflection by bouncing on the floor and looking for movement. If we find soft spots, we cut out and replace damaged plywood before laying anything. We also use a straightedge to check for level. A floor that is off by even a quarter inch will make large-format tiles rock and crack. Our prep work is what keeps the finished floor flat and solid.
