Texture finishing

Texture finishing is the layer of drywall work that gives walls and ceilings their final character. Homeowners call about it when they are finishing a new room, remodeling an older space, or trying to match a texture that was damaged or patched. The job involves applying a joint compound or spray material in a pattern that hides seams, fasteners, and minor flaws that flat paint would otherwise expose.

The crew starts by protecting floors and furniture with drop cloths, then masks off trim, doors, and anything that should not get texture. For a spray application, we mix the compound to the right consistency and set the hopper gun pressure for the pattern. For hand-applied textures like skip trowel or knockdown, we use a trowel or hawk and trowel. After the texture sets, we check the consistency, sand any high spots, and prime before paint.

What changes from job to job is the size of the space, the height of the ceilings, and the condition of the existing drywall. A small room with low ceilings goes faster than a large open area with vaulted ceilings, where scaffolding and more masking are needed. Matching an existing texture takes extra time because we have to study the pattern and adjust our technique. Access to the room, furniture that must be moved, and whether the walls are new or already painted also affect how long the work takes and what it costs.

On the day of the job, the crew arrives with everything needed, sets up drop cloths and masking, and works through the space methodically. We protect anything that stays in the room, and we clean up dust and debris before we leave, including vacuuming floors and removing masking. Before we arrive, you should clear the room of small items and fragile decorations, and after we finish, you need to wait for the texture to dry completely before painting or touching the walls.

Texture finishing is not just about looks; it also affects how durable the wall surface is and how easy it is to clean. A smooth finish shows every imperfection, so it takes more coats and sanding to get right. Knockdown and orange peel are more forgiving and can hide minor dings, but they still require a skilled hand to keep the pattern even. The right texture can also make a room feel warmer or more modern, depending on the pattern you choose.

One of the first things a homeowner asks is whether they should paint over existing texture or have it removed and redone. Removing texture is a separate job that involves scraping, sanding, and possibly re-taping joints, so it is more involved than simply re-texturing over a painted surface.
