Drywall repair

Drywall damage is one of those things you notice at the worst moment, a doorknob punched through the wall, a water stain spreading on the ceiling, or a crack creeping from a window frame. You might have patched it yourself once, but the tape is bubbling or the texture never matched. When you call us, you are dealing with a wall that looks worse than it should, and you want it to disappear, not just be covered up.

We start by cutting out the damaged section with a utility knife, making a clean rectangular opening. If the studs behind are sound, we screw in backing blocks, fit a new piece of drywall, and fasten it with drywall screws. Then we tape the joints with paper tape and apply three coats of joint compound, sanding between each coat. For texture, we match the existing finish, orange peel, knockdown, or smooth, using a texture sprayer or a trowel, and we prime the patch so it blends with the paint.

What makes one repair different from the next is the size of the hole, the condition of the surrounding drywall, and the type of texture. A small nail pop is a quick fix, but a water-damaged ceiling may need the whole sheet replaced if the paper is delaminated. Access matters too, a patch in a stairwell or behind a toilet takes longer to set up and finish. The age of the paint and the lighting in the room also affect how much blending is needed, so we look at the whole wall before quoting.

On the day of the repair, we lay down drop cloths to protect your floors and furniture, and we tape off the area if we are sanding. We work in stages because the mud needs to dry between coats, so a one-day repair is possible for small holes, but bigger jobs may take two or three visits. Before we arrive, clear the area around the damage, move pictures, shelves, and anything fragile. After we finish, you will need to wait for the paint to cure before washing the wall, but the patch itself is ready for paint as soon as we prime it.

We match the texture exactly, which is what makes the repair invisible. Whether it is a skip trowel on a living room wall or a heavy orange peel in a hallway, we carry samples and adjust our sprayer settings to match the depth and pattern. A repair that does not match the texture is the first thing you see, so we take the time to get it right.
